What is a tummy tuck?

For adults, hanging skin and unwanted fat along the abdominal region can be frustrating despite efforts to lose it. Pregnancy, weight loss, and aging are the most popular reasons why an individual may not be able to regain a tighter and slimmer tummy. An abdominoplasty is a cosmetic enhancement that successfully transforms the stomach area, producing attractive results for patients. Plano, TX Plastic Surgeons, Dr. Haidenberg and Dr. Natan Yaker, perform abdominoplasty that is tailored to the individual's cosmetic goals. This popular surgery at Cosmetic Surgery Associates of Texas allows patients the opportunity to have a new, youthful shape and renewed confidence. What are different types of tummy tucks?

Full Tummy Tuck

A traditional (full) tummy tuck is suitable for both men and women who have a moderate amount of excess skin in their midsection. It is commonly performed on women post-pregnancy. During this surgery, the incision extends from hipbone to hipbone, which grants the surgeon access to a greater portion of the internal structures. Liposuction is used to remove fat and the abdominal muscles are pulled and tightly secured. The belly button is usually repositioned for natural placement.

Mini Tummy Tuck

Individuals who are in relatively good shape but desire a flatter tummy may be good candidates for a mini tummy tuck. These patients have loose abdominal fascia, but the muscles aren’t stretched to the point where a full tummy tuck is necessary. During surgery, a smaller incision is made along the lower abdomen, liposuction is used to remove excess fat, and the remaining skin is pulled tight. The belly button is not affected by this surgery.

Extended Tummy Tuck

The extended tummy tuck is reserved for patients who require major skin tightening and body contouring following a major weight loss. The extended tummy tuck requires a longer incision that extends beyond the hips, as well as another one around the navel.  Liposuction is used and the excess skin is trimmed away and tightened. The belly button is repositioned during this surgery.

What should I expect after a tummy tuck?

Following this procedure in Plano, TX, you will be monitored and released wearing a compression device to decrease swelling. Standing upright and walking will be difficult at first, so you should rest for a few days. Standing becomes easier once the abdominal muscles adjust and the incision begins to heal. Most patients should be able to resume normal activities in around two weeks. Exercise can resume around six weeks or when you are given permission by Dr. Haidenberg or Dr. Yaker. The midsection will feel some discomfort and tightness, but you will feel normal once healed.

How much does a tummy tuck cost?

The price for abdominoplasty will vary depending on the technique used, the patient’s condition and aesthetic goals, as well as other factors relating to the surgical case. However, on average, most patients can expect to pay between $6,800-$12,500 for their tummy tuck procedure at Cosmetic Surgery Associates of Texas.

Tummy Tuck FAQ

What type of tummy tuck should I get?
There are three main types of tummy tucks: full, extended, and mini. In your initial consultation, Dr. Haidenberg will ask about your needs and goals before performing a physical exam. Then, he can better decide which tummy tuck will produce your best results. A full tummy tuck is good if you want to address issues in both the lower and upper stomach, while a mini abdominoplasty is good for problems below your belly button, such as a "pooch." An extended tummy tuck can address issues in the abdomen as well as the upper thighs and hips.

What will my scars look like?
The incisions needed for your abdominoplasty will vary based on which technique is being used. For all tummy tucks, Dr. Haidenberg uses the thinnest incisions possible to limit scarring. He also places incisions in areas that are less visible (in the pubic region or belly button) so they can be hidden by a swimsuit or underwear. After your surgery, it is important to adhere to your scar care instructions so your incisions heal properly and blend into your natural skin.

Can I get pregnant after a tummy tuck?
Although you can still get pregnant after an abdominoplasty, it will likely affect your results. Dr. Haidenberg recommends that you be finished building your family before you consider an abdominoplasty. If you do get pregnant after a tummy tuck, another surgery can be performed to refresh your results.

Can I get a tummy tuck with another surgery?
Several patients get another body surgery with a tummy tuck to see more dramatic improvements. During your consultation with Dr. Haidenberg, talk to him about all of your concerns so a unique surgical plan may be developed that matches your aesthetic goals. You might combine a tummy tuck with a thigh lift for a lower body lift or other areas for body contouring. If you want to rejuvenate your whole body after having children or losing a lot of weight, you may be an ideal candidate for after-weight loss surgery or a mommy makeover.
