Overview

Aging, gravity, and significant weight loss are the most common reasons people develop loose skin on their body, but this can be improved with a surgical lift like a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). A reverse tummy tuck (upper abdominoplasty) can be very helpful for patients who are concerned about excess skin and fat rolls on their upper stomach. Commonly known as "bra fat pads," this excess skin just below the breasts are especially prominent when a person is sitting. The reverse tummy tuck can also help patients who have a tummy tuck or had liposuction in their stomach, but may not be satisfied with their results due to scar tissue forming at the incision site or excess skin that has developed over time. Board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Natan Yaker and Board Eligible Dr. Jaime Haidenberg are pleased to offer the reverse tummy tuck procedure at their practice, Cosmetic Surgery Associates of Texas in Dallas.

Surgical Technique

To perform the reverse tummy tuck surgery, Dr. Yaker or Dr. Haidenberg will make either a single W-shaped incision or two smaller incisions in the natural creases between the bottom of the breasts (the inframammary fold). Once the incision is made, excess skin will be removed and light liposuction may be performed on stubborn pockets of fat to create a smooth result. The remaining skin will be pulled tight and Dr. Yaker or Dr. Haidenberg will suture the incision closed.

During/After Surgery

The reverse tummy tuck is performed as an outpatient surgery with the patient under general anesthesia. The surgery usually lasts about 2 – 3 hours at Dr. Yaker's on-site surgical facility, which is accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF). After an observation period, the patient will be allowed to leave to recover at home. Patients should schedule a follow-up appointment with Dr. Yaker about 2 weeks after their surgery so he can assess their recovery and results. Most patients will need about 4 – 6 weeks to recover from their procedure, but many are able to return to sedentary jobs and perform light activities within a few weeks.

Reverse Tummy Tuck FAQs

Reverse, Full, or Mini?

There are many abdominoplasty techniques available today, including full, mini, extended, and reverse tummy tucks, so Dr. Yaker or Dr. Haidenberg will help each patient determine the best surgery for their needs. During the initial consultation, Dr. Yaker or Dr. Haidenberg will listen to the patient's concerns and goals while also examining the patient's stomach before discussing his recommendations. Each patient will receive a custom treatment plan that will achieve their best results.

Recovery Tips?

Patients should wear a post-surgical compression garment that will help support their core while they regain their strength and improve their blood circulation for better healing. After surgery, patients should allow their body to rest and heal, but short walks throughout the recovery period are encouraged.

What About Scarring?

Since the incision is made below the breasts in a natural crease, the scar should be almost invisible if the patient follows their scar care instructions after the surgery. Dr. Yaker or Dr. Haidenberg will go over how to clean the incision and other suggestions that will help the scar heal, so that it better blends with the normal skin.

Correcting a Tummy Tuck?

Some patients who have had liposuction on the stomach or a tummy tuck may develop concerns with their results because of scar tissue that forms. The reverse tummy tuck can improve the appearance of this scar tissue so patients can get the results they want. Other patients benefit from a reverse tummy tuck years after their initial tummy tuck when natural aging, gravity, and weight fluctuations have caused excess skin in the upper abdomen.
